Holiday Extras under attack for survey results

Thursday, 04 Jul, 2013 0

Holiday Extras has come under attack for claiming 90% of Brits hate camping.

The holiday add-on company said its research had found 90% of holidaymakers detest camping and caravan breaks, only 13% of Brits benefit from a one-week holiday and 74% are stressed out about luggage allowances.

But Pitchup.com founder Dan Yates has challenged the figures.

He said: "We launched Pitchup.com back in 2009 and this is the most outrageous statistic we’ve seen to date.

"Indeed you only have to look at stats from GBTS (Great Britain Tourism Survey) which shows in 2011 17 million Brits took a camping or caravanning trip in Great Britain.

"This compares to just 6 million UK holidaymakers who visited France and 10 million who visited Spain.

"Furthermore the IPS (International Passenger Survey) results in 2012 show 21% fewer overseas holidays trips were taken compared to 2008, showing a turn in favour towards domestic breaks."

But Anthony Clarke-Cowell, communications director at Holiday Extras, defended the research, saying it was "entirely independent" and had surveyed 2,087 holidaymakers.

"The results are both robust and conclusive," he said.

"At Holiday Extras, we appreciate that each holidaymaker has their own personal preferences, and of course we embrace, encourage and cater for them.

"However, let’s face it, the way we holiday has evolved beyond recognition over the past 50 years, and whilst Brits would have once flocked to pitch a tent, our results have shown that they’re now looking for creature comforts, whether enjoying a weekend break in the UK or an indulgent two weeks in the sun."

The survey was conducted by survey specialists, The Leadership Factor.
