Hong Kong Airport to resume transit flights

Sunday, 26 May, 2020 0

Hong Kong Airport will allow the resumption of transit traffic starting in June.

Restrictions will be lifted June 1 allowing passengers to transit through one of Asia’s busiest hubs but entry into Hong Kong is still banned for non-residents.

To curb the spread of Covid-19 all transit flights were banned in April which resulted in passenger numbers shrinking by 99.5% last month.

Last month the airport processed just 32,000 air travellers.

Although HKIA relies heavily on transit traffic for revenues, it is unlikely to be a quick fix.

Homegrown airlines Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon are currently operating a skeleton service to just a handful of cities across Asia.

Hog Kong has had no new Covid-19 cases for more than a week and has announced the easing of some restrictions.

From May 29 some entertainment venues will be allowed to reopen.

"The epidemic has eased. We are resuming daily activities in society and economy step by step," said Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam.

Singapore Changi Airport is also allowing easing restrictions and allowing transit passenger flights again from June 2.
