Hong Kong could start cruises to nowhere this summer

Hong Kong has started drawing up plans to start ‘cruises to nowhere.’

The Hong Kong government has started discussions with cruise lines to allow fully vaccinated cruises to nowhere, which could start in the next few months.

"If thousands of crew have to undergo quarantine and vaccination upon arriving at Hong Kong, it will take a while to get prepared for the voyages," said Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau Tang-wah.

"Citizens who want to join high seas cruises will have to get vaccinated in advance."

Only Hong Kong residents would be allowed to sail.

Singapore started a cruise to nowhere programme late last year with operators Dream Cruises and Royal Caribbean Cruises, which have been successful.

According to tourism lawmaker Yiu Si-wing voyages could begin by the end of July.

Capacity would likely be limited to about 50%.

According to the South China Morning Post, Royal Caribbean is interested and would like to offer short two- to four-night sailings twice a week.
