Hotel of the Week: Aquis Agios Gordios, Corfu
If you want to go to an adults-only Mediterranean resort with good food, excellent views and a chance to get super fit then you could do worse than Aquis Agios Gordios in Corfu, writes TravelMole’a Graham McKenzie.
The AAG, as I will refer to it from now on, is one of five Aquis hotels on Corfu and one of 11 in the group which span many of the popular places in Greece including the capital.
The AAG is set high on the cliffs above the sea with glorious views from the majority of its rooms and from all of its bars and restaurants. With easy access to Corfu airport (more about that later), it is an easy but engaging transfer across what is undoubtedly one of the greener and subsequently more attractive of the Ionian islands.
Corfu itself is full of history and heritage. For visitors it has an intriguing mix of Venetian, British and of course Greek influences in its architecture, food and general culture. Many an hour can be spent wandering round Corfu Town admiring the buildings, the wonderful old narrow streets, gulping the aromas of local cuisine, which are many, and just watching the world go by.
The majority of visitors to the shores however do not, I suspect, give a flying fig about any of that. What they are after is good beaches, food, sun and the odd glass of wine, beer or Ouzo. The AAD provides all of that and due to the location has an inbuilt fitness machine.
The seafront bar, which is excellent, is a considerable walk down the stairs. The walk back from the seafront bar seems even further. Wherever you go in the hotel, unless you want to take the elevator route, a good deal of steps are encountered both up and down. A couple of weeks here and you are guaranteed Bradley Wiggins type thighs and calves.
The topography does however add to the stunning views you can get at anytime but especially in the evening from the pool bar or the terrace of the main bar. Sunsets are quite spectacular as are the sunrises if you can get up early enough to see them. The food served under the all-inclusive arrangement is more than adequate and it would be difficult to fault the staff for anything other than excellent friendly service.
So the holiday is over and back to blighty but beware Corfu airport. Pick the wrong time and the wrong day ( I flew back on a Sunday morning) and the scrum to get through security resembles the Americans last day in Saigon. Total chaos, no order, no organisation and extremely unpleasant just about sums it up. Pity because the island and the hotel left nothing but good memories.
