More than 100 of auditors are being trained to inspect hotel environmental and ethical sustainability initiatives worldwide.
The move will come after independent health and safety organisation Check Safety First backed the Federation of Tour Operators’ Travelife scheme.
The initiative created by the FTO and part-funded by the European Union is designed to support an efficient and cost-effective introduction of sustainability principles within the travel industry.
The two main areas within the initiative are environmental (energy consumption, water management, waste disposal and recycling) and ethical (labour relations, CSR, staff morale and contributions to the local community).
Check Safety First already works with more than 1,500 hotels in 24 countries.
The new collaboration will provide the Travelife scheme with the opportunity for growth across several territories.
Jason Burnett, technical director at Check Safety First, said: “Green and ethical travel is slowly climbing higher and higher up the consumers’ list of holiday requirements and hotels are becoming increasingly aware of this.
“Initiatives such as Travelife provide hoteliers with an outlet to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable travel, while enabling travellers to opt for a greener holiday by simply looking out for the Travelife award symbol in brochures.
“This is a great opportunity that will benefit everyone involved within the industry – travel agents, operators, consultants, hoteliers and, of course, the holidaymakers themselves.”
