A couple of hackers who took down booking systems for the Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) network did it ‘for fun.’
They contacted the BBC saying it was a ransomware attack, but when that was rejected they deleted large amounts of data.
They said they are from Vietnam, and were able to access IHG’s systems via an easily found and weak password, Qwerty1234.
UK-based IHG operates about 6,000 hotels globally.
It caused major problems with making booking and checking-in.
Calling themselves TeaPea, they contacted the BBC via messaging app Telegram, showing screenshots of the cyberattack they carried out.
