India’s civil aviation ministry has warned airlines it will take action over any price gouging in the wake of the Go First bankruptcy.
Since Go First grounded all flights earlier this month, there have been public complaints of price hikes.
The ministry says it is looking closely at prices on Go First routes.
“Air passengers should not be oppressed by unbridled hike in fares, otherwise the ministry may take action,” a senior ministry official told local media.
“There shouldn’t be a hike in airfares especially in the sector where Go First has stopped operation.”
Social media posts cite some routes doubling in price.
Agency Belair Travel confirmed fliers’ fears: “Air fares are indeed witnessing a surge.”
There is also an increase in demand for summer travel which is likely pushing up fares.
Go First grounded flights on May 3 and operations remain curtailed until at least May 26.
