IT outage: Thousands of flights canceled
The number of US flights canceled Friday due to the global IT outage is approaching 3,000.
Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport was worst hit Friday morning and hours later airports across the country are still reeling from the IT meltdown.
Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, which has thousands of business customers globally, said a defective software update has caused the major global outage.
The big three US airlines requested FAA ground stops.
Delta Air Lines ‘paused its global flight schedule due to a vendor technology issue that is impacting several airlines and businesses around the world.’
American Airlines has resumed services while airlines including JetBlue and Southwest weren’t affected.
The outage seemed to mostly affect systems running on Windows.
United Airlines resumed a limited number of flights Friday morning but warned of the knock-on effect of cancelations and delays for the rest of the day.
It also affected flight operations around the globe from Europe to India and New Zealand.
The outage also impacted hospitals, government agencies and several 911 operation centers went down.
Globally, more than 5,000 flights were canceled on Friday, according to aviation analytics firm, Cirium.
