ITM rewards ‘green achievers’ in business travel

The Institute of Travel Management has unveiled the winners of its first Project ICARUS awards recognizing green achievements by business travel industry suppliers.

EasyJet, Virgin Trains, Carlson Wagonlit Travel and Apex Hotels are among the winners.

Entry was open to suppliers across seven sectors – air, hotel, rail, ground transportation, technology, intermediaries and consultancies.

Suppliers were asked to explain their products and services, how they helped buyers reduce CO2 emissions, how they were working internally to reduce their carbon footprint and to provide case study evidence.

ITM executive director Paul Tilstone said: “A panel of eight judged marked the entries for iinnovation, leadership; sustainability, scalability and transferability.

“Once the marks were collated and discussed, the judges reached a consensus on the average mark per entry.

“If the entries in one category all fell below that line then no award was made in that category to ensure we only recognised excellence.”

He added: “Many suppliers are just getting to grips with creating solutions to address market needs, and all of the winners should be commended for their actions.”

The ceremony took place in an office just off London’s Oxford Street in front of the ITMTV cameras.

“It would have been hypocritical of us not to minimise the carbon footprint of the awards,” said Tilstone.

“Live events also cost a lot of money and we wanted to make the awards free to watch. Consequently we filmed them, so that our members can watch them, at their own convenience, through the ITM website when we re-launch the up-graded site in a few weeks.”
