Japan grants approval for Korea airline merger
Korean Air’s long drawn out airline merger with Asiana Airlines is one more step closer to completion.
Japan’s antitrust regulator has given it the green light.
Japanese authorities had been in discussions with airline officials and their legal reps since 2021.
Korean Air began the process with Japan’s regulator three years ago
The airline had to take corrective action to ensure some routes weren’t stifling competition due to the two airlines’ combined market share.
Korean Air has reportedly given up some routes.
Now, the airline merger rests on the approvals of the last two international regulators – the US and EU.
“We expect Japan’s approval will positively influence the decisions of the US and EU authorities,” Korean Air said.
