Jumeirah tower hotel in London aims for pre-Olympics opening
A tower hotel on London’s Southbank, to be managed by Dubai-based luxury group Jumeirah, has won planning approval.
The Jumeirah Hotel at Beetham Tower will have 261 rooms and suites, restaurants and bars, a ballroom, meeting spaces and a spa, health and leisure facility.
The property is due to open in 2011 and is expected to be a major attraction for visitors to the 2012 Olympics.
The hotel will be part of a mixed-use development, situated within a 175-metre high, 52-storey glass tower at Number One Blackfriars Road, adjacent to Blackfriars Bridge.
Designed by award-winning Ian Simpson Architects, the tower will house 64 apartments and penthouses set above the hotel as well as cafes, restaurants and shops at the base of the tower.
There will also be a two-storey rooftop deck, which will sit higher than the London Eye to give panoramic views.
The Beetham Organisation, which has created a series of towers in major cities across the UK, is responsible for developing the project.
Chairman Hugh Frost said: “The creation of One Blackfriars Road has been successfully recognised by the council as part of a larger regeneration scheme to boost the capital’s tourism in the run up to the 2012 Olympics. We see the tower standing as a new landmark for London and prime symbol of London’s maturing skyline set to attract more visitors to the South Bank area.”
Gerald Lawless, executive chairman of Jumeirah Group, said: “The Jumeirah Hotel at Beetham Towers will exemplify Jumeirah’s core essence to stay different and further reinforce our presence in this important market with a new and unique landmark. With planning permission now approved, we look forward to working with developers to ensure the delivery of this tremendous project in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games.”
