Juneau rejects Saturday cruise ship ban

Thursday, 17 Oct, 2024 0

Residents of Alaska cruise hub Juneau have rejected a proposition to ban cruise ship visits on Saturdays.

The question of a Saturday ban on cruise calls was up for public vote and has been rejected with about 60% voting ‘no.’

The ‘ship-free Saturdays’ proposal failed but is just one of several measures taken to limit cruise overtourism.

Juneau city officials have already agreed to limit cruise ship calls to five per day.

It has also agreed passenger number limits with major cruise lines from 2026.

This will put a cap of 16,000 per day and 12,000 on Saturdays.

Currently during the busiest days, Juneau receives up to 20,000 ship guests a day.

The vote result was welcomed by trade group Cruise Lines International Association.

“We believe joint, collaborative, and direct dialogue is the best way to maintain balanced and effective tourism management to ensure long-term economic stability and livelihoods in Juneau,” CLIA said.
