Large wave causes power failure to UK bound cruise ship
Expedition cruise ship MS Maud was hit with a power outage in the middle of the North Sea, causing it to lose all navigational ability.
A large wave crashed into the ship’s bridge causing the power outage.
“There is no power on the ship. The main engine is functioning but the navigation systems and radars are not,” a spokesperson for owner Hurtigruton said.
It happened while the ship was about 200 miles off the UK’s east coast.
The Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre said all 266 passengers and 131 crew members were safe.
The wave crashed through the bridge’s windows damaging equipment.
Hurtigruten said it is ‘a temporary loss of power’ and ‘the condition of the ship remains stable.’
HX ship MS Maud was scheduled to arrive in Tilbury today.
A towage vessel was expected to arrive at the ship’s position late on Thursday night.
The ship can steer manually but has no working navigational systems.
“I do not think there is any danger to the ship. If the captain thought so, he would have asked to be evacuated, which he hasn’t,” a Danish rescue centre spokesperson said.
