Largest development in Caribbean to draw international visitors

Thursday, 14 Nov, 2005 0

Large-scale hospitality and gaming companies are teaming up to build what is being described as the largest single-phase development in the Caribbean.

Baha Mar Resorts with Harrah’s Entertainment and Starwood plans a 1,000-acre resort project in Nassau, Bahamas that will have 3,550 rooms.

There will be four hotels, including the only collection of four Starwood brands at a single resort. The project will also mark the first Caesars Hotel project since the company was acquired by Harrah’s last June.

Gary Loveman, chairman and CFO of Harrah’s Entertainment, said the project will draw luxury-conscious international visitors.

“We believe this integrated resort represents an auspicious international debut for the Caesars brand, and offers some insight into the sort of high-profile gaming-entertainment projects we plan to pursue in promising global markets in coming years,” he said.

Baha Mar Resorts says the project will include a free-standing luxury spa facility, the largest of its kind in the Caribbean.

Also being built: an eco-water park with live performances; 175,000 square feet of meeting space; and a 20-acre beach and pool experience with 3,000 feet of continuous beachfront.

Other hotels will include a 300-room W and a 300-room St. Regis. There will be a Westin and a Sheraton hotel.

Construction is set to begin in 2006 with completion in 2010.

A previously announced agreement with Nicklaus Design calls for an 18-hole golf course.

Future phases of the project will also include other hotels and a second golf course.

Baha Mar Resorts is head of overall development.

The project represents a “quantum leap forward in the continued success of The Bahamas, ushering in a new era for Nassau’s Cable Beach area of New Providence Island,” said Caribbean Travel News.
