Las Vegas McCarran Airport gets a name change

Monday, 19 Feb, 2021 0

Las Vegas McCarran International Airport will soon have a new moniker.

It is being renamed after Senate majority leader Harry Reid, who hails from Nevada.

The change was unanimously agreed by the Clark County Commission.

State legislators first tried to change it in 2017.

They wanted to remove the name of Patrick McCarran which has stood since 1948.

McCarran was a strong supporter of aviation but lawmakers no longer wanted the airport to be associated with McCarran due to his racist views.

McCarran served as a Nevada senator for nearly 20 years until his death in 1954.

MGM Resorts CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle said naming an airport after McCarran, who supported racist policies, sent out the wrong message.

The name change has been passed but it will take some months before it becomes official.

"We must complete some administrative tasks before we officially recognize any name change," said Ian Gregor, spokesman for the FAA’s Western Pacific Region.

"These include processing the name change to ensure proper tracking of federal grant-agreement obligations, as well as revising the Airport Master Record and air traffic control maps."
