A helicopter crashed in south London during this morning’s rush hour, falling to the ground in a ball of flames.

Two people were killed, according to the BBC, the pilot of the helicopter and a person on the ground. Another nine people were injured, one is in a critical conditoin. One was pulled from a burning car, it said.

Witnesses at the scene said the chopper came down after hitting a crane on top of a building in Vauxhall, just south of the River Thames.

The accident happened very close to the Vauxhall public transport interchange.

It is believed the crane may have landed on top of two cars close to a main road near Battersea, where there is a heliport.

The crane is thought to have been on top of the St George’sTower, which at 50-storeys is planned to be Britain’s tallest residential building.

Early reports suggest there was one person onboard the helicopter. London Fire Brigade had 22 engines at the scene within minutes of the accident, which happened at around 0800 hrs this morning.

London metro trains in and out of Waterloo were brought to a standstill due to heavy smoke.
