London Stansted has published its long-term sustainable growth plan to take the business forward for the next 20 years.
The draft Sustainable Development Plan (SDP) outlines how the airport intends to make best use of its existing single runway and managing the impact of the airport’s operation for local communities.
London Stansted’s latest forecasts are for between 48-51 million passengers a year in the 2040s.
The airport says it can achieve this without an increase in the existing number of permitted flights.
It says the increased passenger numbers will come from airlines planning to use larger models of aircraft than previously forecast.
This new plan comes after London Stansted recently announced a five-year £1.1bn investment programme.
The centrepiece of the transformation is a £600m extension to the airport’s existing terminal, which will have more seating areas plus new shops, bars and restaurants.
It says passenger travel to and from the airport will evolve in the years with half of all journeys by public transport.
Stansted will be able to support 16,300 jobs for local people, while there will be increased support for the Stansted Airport College.
This will offer more places to students to meet industry skills shortages in engineering and hospitality.
Gareth Powell, London Stansted’s MD, said: “We want to continue our success, growing the nearly 30 million passengers we welcomed this last year.”
“Over the coming months, we will be engaging widely with our local community on what the plan will involve, to ensure those who live and work near the airport get a chance to help shape the airport’s future.”
