Malaysia hotel occupancy up as restrictions ease

Tuesday, 09 Jul, 2020 0

Malaysia’s weeks-long lockdown led to an uptick in travel demand and increased hotel occupancy, said the country’s tourism minister.

At the end of June hotel occupancy more than tripled to over 30%, said tourism, arts and culture minister Nancy Shukri.

In April it was down to under 9%.

It edged up to nearly 10% in May as the less strict recovery movement control order came into effect.

"At June 30, occupancy surged to 30.7%. This shows that the public is beginning to go out. They are brave enough to go out because the situation in the country is quite safe," she told Bernama news agency.

The ministry has been in constant discussions with the tourism and hotel industry to support and address their concerns.

"We always have engagement, discussions with tourism industry players, and they give us ideas which we use as feedback for the government," she said.

Shukri said the tourism ministry is working with the health, home and foreign ministries to draw up guidelines which will be used to discuss ‘green zone’ travel corridors with other nations to kickstart international tourism.
