Marriott International in another data breach

Sunday, 31 Mar, 2020 0

Marriott International says it has fallen victim to another cyber attack, the second time in two years the hotel chain has revealed a data breach.

The group said the attack was carried out via third-party software and 5.2 million guests may have had their details compromised.

An online statement says the breach affected a guest services application used by hotels operated and franchised under its various brands.

It believes activity started in mid-January and said it noticed an unexpected amount of guest information was accessed at the end of February using the login credentials of two employees at a franchised property.

It says guests’ names, loyalty account information and other personal details may have been accessed.

The company does not believe credit card information, passport numbers or driver licence information has been accessed, although it is still investigating.

It has offered to enrol guests in a personal information monitoring service for up to a year.

In November 2018, it was discovered hackers had accessed information on up to 383 million guests of Marriott’s Starwood Hotels and Resorts brand, including unencrypted passport numbers of at least 5.25 million people and credit card details of 8.6 million guests.

It is believed the vulnerability began when the systems of the Starwood hotels group were compromised in 2014, two years before Marriott acquired its rival.
