Meeting Professionals International backs down on CMM revisions
After a backlash in the meetings community, Meeting Professionals International will make a number of revisions to its proposed new accreditation program.
This comes after MPI announced changes to the Certificate in Meeting Management in December, which CMM holders felt could dilute the value of accreditation.
MPI had originally planned a name change, lowering a requirement of 10 years’ experience to five years, and opening up eligibility for travel agents.
In an open letter addressed to CMM holders, MPI CEO Paul Van Deventer said prospective CMM candidates are now required to have at least 7-10 years’ experience in meetings or business travel and a minimum of three years management experience.
The new proposed name —CMM Designation Program—has been scrapped.
Two years of profit-and-loss responsibility is mandatory along with a personal letter of recommendation from a supervisor.
Participants will need to show "a business case in which they must apply the course materials learned," Van Deventer said.
Cases should reflect real situations and address practical, solvable challenges, he also said.
With immediate effect, all existing CMM holders will retain the title, which is recognized by MPI and partner Global Business Travel Association.
