Melbourne Airport posts international passenger growth

Melbourne Airport handled nearly one million international travellers last month.

The 922,000 passengers passing through the international terminal represented a 8% increase on the previous year.

A total of 1,989,134 domestic passengers were recorded for the month of August, which was a slight decrease on last August, mostly down to the exit of Rex from major trunk routes.

For the first time since the pandemic Melbourne Airport will partner with multiple airlines and travel platform Webjet to market international airfares.

The global sale is live now and is for travel between the January to August 2025.

The airfare sale lasts through September 23 or until fares are sold out.

Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Jim Parashos said the growth in international capacity was helping to offset a currently stagnant domestic market.

“We have worked hard to attract new airlines to Melbourne Airport at the same time as growing our list of destinations, meaning Victorian travellers have more choice than ever,” he said.

“Our partnership with Webjet is a great chance for passengers to snap up cheap flights for their 2025 holidays.

Parashos said Melbourne Airport’s planned third runway will give the airport the increased capacity for new and existing carriers to expand their services to Victoria.

“This ultimately means a better offering for travellers.”
