Melbourne Airport sets March record for international passengers

Melbourne Airport achieved a new March record for international passenger traffic.

It comes as the airport welcomed new airline Turkish Airlines.

The 923,065 international travellers welcomed through Melbourne Airport last month surpassed the previous March record of 916,849 in 2018.

Turkish Airlines launched its Australian operation with flights from Melbourne Airport to Istanbul (via Singapore) on March 2.

Year-on-year international traffic grew 28% while domestic traffic was up just 5%, stymied by high airfares, the airport says.

Overall, Melbourne Airport welcomed 3,016,947 air travellers in March, with passenger volumes now surpassing three million in four of the past six months.

Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer Lorie Argus said: “It’s clear from our international figures that Victorians want to travel, and they’re prepared to do so in record numbers.”

In planning for future growth, the airport has submitted plans for a parallel north-south runway.

“We are also working with the airlines to explore ways of increasing our terminal capacity in a timely and cost-effective way,” Argus added.
