Moevenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach: Kilos of Kindness and Community Care
Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach is situated in Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Residence close to the Arabian Gulf. The modern, chic 5-star hotel is located on The Walk, close to The Beach mall which features beachfront shops, restaurants and the UAE’s first outdoor cinema.
Green Globe recently recertified Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach for the fourth consecutive year in acknowledgement of its commitment to sustainable management and operations.
"We are delighted to be re-certified by Green Globe once again," said Philip Jones, General Manager at the hotel. "I am very proud to say that Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach is dedicated to environmentally sustainable tourism and this has been demonstrated through a variety of initiatives such as efficient energy conservation practices, and awareness campaigns within the team and outside."
Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach participated in its annual Kilo of Kindness charity activity last year and collected over 124 kilograms of school supplies and clothing that was presented to the Senses Center. The Kilo of Kindness campaign, part of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts sustainable program Shine, coincides with the United Nations International Day of Charity held annually on September 5. During the week of the campaign guests were asked to donate at least a kilo of goods to the Senses Center which is dedicated to providing care, rehabilitation and accommodation for children with special needs. In return for their generosity visitors received a delicious ice cream treat.
As part of another CSR initiative planned for the future, the property plans to donate amenities to Soap For Hope. The Soap For Hope program collects used soap slivers which are recycled and processed. The soap is then redistributed to impoverished communities in countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia and Kenya.
Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach underwent a comprehensive audit by Green Globe’s preferred Middle East Partner FARNEK. Environmental strategies have included the ongoing replacement of conventional lighting with LED lights throughout the property thereby reducing energy consumption. And budgets for 2016 include the installation of LED lighting in car parking areas at the hotel.
Twice a year Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach conducts a Can Collection Day to reduce the property’s impact on the environment. Can Collection Day is organized by the Emirates Environmental Group. The campaign is held simultaneously across the seven Emirates. The Can Collection Day is a sub-project of the Can Collection Campaign, which was the very first awareness program initiated by the EEG twenty years ago. As part of the campaign organizations collect aluminum cans and then bring the collected, cleaned and compressed cans to a designated area where they are recycled by EEG. The activity is a good opportunity for the hotel to show its commitment as part of the hospitality industry in upholding a greener and cleaner environment.
In addition, in 2015, DUSLCO conducted a training program about waste recycling and segregation to educate staff about the advantages of recycling. DUSLCO is an external contractor that handles all waste disposal at the property.
"Each one of us can really make a difference by acknowledging our responsibility as global citizens and this is reflected in the concerns we all have in making sure we operate at the highest environmental standards possible," concluded Mr Jones.
