Digital concierge, e-passports and integrated systems from check-in to baggage collection are the future of air travel, according to research from Amadeus and the Henley Centre.

The vision was laid-out in the Future Traveller Tribes 2020 study predicting that as travellers seek more control, reassurance and personalisation, airlines will increasingly be forced to use technology to cater to their specific needs.

In addition, to maximise the opportunity of the growing travelling public, airlines will have to integrate systems to create a seamless experience across all elements of travel from booking and check-in to in-flight services and baggage collection and even add-on services such as hotel stays and transfers.

The report describes the vital role of systems in the future as the ‘humanisation of retechnology’ and highlights some of the things that will become more widely adopted as well as some innovations.

Technology development would polarise into four key areas digital personal identities such as e-passports, integrated information systems, real-time information on the go and newer communications tools such mobile phones and the internet.

Amadeus airline business group vice president Frederic Spagnou said consumers could have access to a ‘digital concierge’ acting as a single point of contact for all travel arrangements and add-ons.

He said: “The industry has lost a lot of money in the past four to five years and that’s when you prioritise your investment. Renewal of the fleet was top of the investment list ahead of technology. It was only recently that a few companies decided to invest in the airline industry. Amadeus is one because we live and die with the industry.”

The company claims to have already invested 300 million euros in airline technology.
