Most ‘to cut 2009 travel budgets’ – survey shows

The majority of people in the UK plan to cut their travel budgets in 2009.
This is the conclusion of a survey by online company trivago which found that 35% will compare prices and plan ahead to save money this year.
The study by the travel information website found that only a quarter of British holidaymakers will spend as much as usual.
Fifteen per cent will choose cheaper holiday destinations.
Six per cent will save money by choosing a hotel with fewer stars and extras; the same percentage will travel less and two per cent plan to fly less in 2009.
Seven per cent will stay in the UK, while three per cent plan to save by reducing spending whilst on holiday.
More than a quarter (27%) plan to spend as much as usual on their holidays in 2009 and only one per cent will not go on any weekend breaks this year.
The survey which was answered by 3,489 users in December 2008 and January 2009.
Travellers in other parts of Europe are also tightening their belts with many believing the best way to save is by planning ahead to find the best deals.
Most travellers said they will compare all the available offers to lower their holiday costs.
Italians are on the look out for the best bargain: 42% compare all the offers available to reduce their holiday expenses.
Thirty one per cent of Germans also stated that they will start saving money by comparing different deals.
Fourteen per cent of Spaniards will save money by focusing on cheaper destinations.
A quarter of the travellers from all the European countries surveyed stated they will spend as much as usual on their holidays in 2009.
