New Flight Plus sales must be included in ATOL renewal
The CAA is writing to ATOL holders asking them to take into account the new Flight-Plus sales when renewing or varying their licences.
Agents renewing their ATOL in March will have to make sure the ATOL covers the holidays they plan to sell from 30 April onwards – when the scheme comes into force.
The authority will also be contacting agents who currently don’t hold ATOLs, through their open days or by working with trade associations, so that they can highlight what the ATOL changes will mean.
Agents will also need to assess how they are affected by the new ‘Airline Ticket Agent’ exemption – which will replace the current ‘Ticket Provider’ exempt sales.
This means if agents don’t have their own ATOL they must issue flight confirmations as soon as the client pays and have an agreement in place with the airline.
Andy Cohen, head of ATOL Licensing at the CAA said: "It is important for us to provide information to all those in the travel industry affected by these changes and over the coming weeks we will providing more information to both ATOL holders and unlicensed firms to allow them to make business decisions."
"This is particularly important for travel organisers whose licences are due to be renewed in March, as they will need to make sure their ATOL covers the holidays they plan to sell from 30 April onwards, while those due to renew in September should also look at varying their authorisation."
The CAA will be appearing at over 50 events in the run up to 30 April, including a series of CAA open days where travel organisers can receive one-to-one support from the CAA’s licensing team – whether they are current licence holders or organisations needing a licence for the very first time.
