New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio hopes to kick start the tourism recovery by temporarily eliminating hotel room occupancy tax rate for the summer months. The tax will be waived for a three-month period beginning 1 June 2021.
The current hotel occupancy tax rate is currently 5.8%. The city says hotel tax revenue is down about 89% compared to a year earlier.
"It is critical that we lend a helping hand to an industry that is very dependent on tourism, and eliminating the hotel room occupancy for summer is a good step," said City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.
