No vacancy sign about to go up in Hawaii?
Record numbers of visitors are alarming some tourism officials who worry the islands are going beyond their capacity.
Last year, Hawaii had almost 7.5 million visitors, up 6.7% over the previous year.
Every major Hawaiian island had an increase in visitor arrivals.
“An affordable hotel room on Maui, an empty patch of warm sand on Waikiki Beach, a prime tee time on the Big Island — all are becoming more scarce as more tourists flock to the islands,” said the Associated Press.
Some tourism officials are worried the growing numbers will make the area less attractive.
“If you try to stuff too many visitors into this space we have, you begin to be a detriment to your product,” said Rex Johnson, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
