Not of Titanic propotions but dozens injured on Princess Cruise

A faulty steering column was apparently the cause but investigators are still trying to determine what caused a ship to lurch severely almost 100 passengers were injured.

Two victims were admitted to local hospitals.

Princess Cruise Lines, which operates the involved ship, the Crown Princess, said in a statement were “numerous reports of cuts, bruises and fractures.”

The New York-bound Crown Princess just outside Port Canaveral, Florida, on its way to New York when it took such a heavy roll that passengers on the seventh floor reported their staterooms under water.

“I’ve heard of heavy weather or rough seas causing a ship to list, but I’ve never heard of this,” said Brian Major, a spokesman for Cruise Lines International Association.

“We are investigating the cause of the ship’s sudden list, which is unknown at this time,” said Crown Princess in a statement that added:

“We can confirm that the watertight integrity of the ship has not been compromised, and it is safe for passengers to remain onboard while the ship is in Port Canaveral.

Arrangements were being made to return passengers home.

The vessel, with about 3,100 passengers and 1,200 crew, had just left Port Canaveral. A Coast Guard spokesman said the incident occurred when the ship reported problems with its steering apparatus.

Oddly enough, the movie scheduled to be shown before the incident was “Titanic,” passengers said.
