NZ regulator to sue Jetstar over flight compensation
New Zealand’s consumer regulator plans to take Qantas Group’s low cost subsidiary Jetstar to court for misleading customers.
It accuses Jetstar of misleading consumers over their rights to flight compensation for delayed and cancelled trips.
The New Zealand Commerce Commission (NZCC) said it believes Jetstar has discouraged consumers from applying for compensation.
It also claims the airline possibly denied flight compensation for impacted flights for reasons within the airline’s control.
“The Civil Aviation Act is clear that airlines have a responsibility to reimburse customers for loss caused by cancellations or delays,” it said.
“The Commerce Commission expects large businesses to take their responsibilities under the law seriously and must honour their obligations to consumers.”
“Jetstar likely made false or misleading statements to consumers about their rights in aviation law, in 2022 and 2023.”
Similar action was started by consumers in Australia, claiming Jetstar tried to avoid paying out valid compensation claims.
