Oil spill reaches Singapore’s resort island
Singapore’s beach resort area is partially off limits after a shipping accident led to an oil spill.
Teams are trying to clean the beach areas of Singapore’s Sentosa resort island.
The spill was caused when a dredger collided with a Singapore fuel supply ship.
It also affected other offshore islands including a marine reserve and a public beach park.
The man-made beaches in Sentosa remain open but water sports and swimming are currently not permitted.
Sentosa houses luxury hotels, casinos, golf courses and a Universal Studios theme park.
Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said the oil spill has been contained, and is being treated with dispersants.
Booms and floating barriers were placed in the water to contain the spread.
“More will be laid over the next few days to prevent further spread of oil onto the shore,” it said.
Conservationists have been on site to asses the risk to marine life.
Conservation group Marine Stewards said there were images taken of dead fish and sea birds covered in oil slick.
