One tenth of business travellers fail to take out insurance
Almost one-in-10 business travellers do not know whether they are covered by travel insurance when travelling for their companies.
According to figures from the ninth annual Barclaycard Business Travel Survey, 64% of business travellers have travel insurance organised by their employer or designated supplier, 24% organise it themselves but 9% do not know whether they are covered or not.
The findings show that employees are more likely to organise their own travel insurance if they work for a company with a low turnover.
For example, 47% of employees that work for companies with a turnover of £250,000 or less organise insurance personally, as do 30% of employees in companies with a turnover of £1 to £5 million. This is in comparison to only 6% that work for companies with a turnover of more than £100 million.
The poll also shows that employees in larger companies are more likely to rely on their employer or designated supplier to organise travel insurance:
Number of employees % that receive company insurance
0 – 5 42%
6 – 49 56%
50 – 249 71%
250 – 499 81%
500 – 1000 75%
1000 + 71%
Barclaycard Business head of card issuing Tim Carlier said: “It is worrying that nearly one tenth of business travellers are unsure who has responsibility for organising their travel insurance.
“Insurance is one of the most important purchases when travelling and failure to be covered could result in complicated financial implications and personal difficulty. It is important for employers to ensure that their staff are aware of company policies.
The survey of 1,500 commercial cardholders nationwide was conducted in October 2004.
