Online guide to Greek islands of Lesvos and Chios unveiled

Sunday, 24 Nov, 2015 0

Greentraveller and the Greek National Tourism Organisation Board have published an online guide to Lesvos and Chios in the North Aegean, Greece.

Greentraveller’s Guide to Lesvos and Chios is an online guide to over 50 recommendations for where to stay, eat and what to do on the two islands.

Written and researched by professional travel writer Sian Lewis, the guide focuses on some of the top places to stay, from easygoing family hotels on the edge of the Aegean Sea to fairytale stone cottages.

The Guide features some of the best spots to find local seasonal food, such as bright Greek salads, fresh-off-the-boat fish and tasty meat dishes, served with glasses of cloudy ouzo and strong coffee.

The Guide also encourages readers to explore these ancient islands, where Homer and Sappho wrote verses, where the Genovese, Byzantine and Ottoman styles have influenced the architecture, and where its easy to step back in time, from the magical, wisteria-covered streets of Molyvos on Lesvos to Chios’ medieval walled villages.

Greentraveller has also produced a short video to accompany the online guide. This high impact, inspirational video showcases some of the best experiences on both islands HERE

Christina Kalogera, Director GNTO UK & Ireland, says: "The Greek islands have been a destination favourite for UK holidaymakers over the decades but there are still so many of them under the radar, such as the North Aegean Islands close to the Asia Minor Coast.

"Lesvos is the third-largest island in Greece and a destination in its own right featuring stunning castles and traditional villages, mountain walks and forests, pristine natural landscapes – including a petrified forest, a golden coastline with azure waters, and a poeticism dating back to ancient Greek poetess Sappho. The island is also famous for its excellent bird-watching locations as well as for its ouzo production.

"Nearby Chios – with a history dating back to the Saracene pirates and the Greek Revolution – also claims to be the birthplace of Homer. Its diverse landscape ranges from lush mountains in the north to the citrus-grove plains of Kampos with its picturesque mansions in the centre and the fertile Mastihohoria (or Mastic villages) in the south – the only place in the world where mastic trees grow. Mastic is cultivated entirely by hand and is nowadays used for gastronomic, medicinal, and cosmetic purposes.

"With so many undiscovered and commanding treasures waiting to be discovered both islands are sure to captivate the most discerning of travellers whether interested in nature, soft adventure, history, architecture, arts and crafts or just simply good food and wine!"

Richard Hammond, Chief Executive of greentraveller.co.uk  says: "We hope this Greentraveller’s Guide to the islands of Lesvos and Chios will help visitors make the most of their time in this glorious part of Greece, in a way that brings local economic benefits while conserving the beauty of these very special islands.

"This Guide is the latest of our online destination guides that are proving popular with holidaymakers looking for that special local touch."
