Over 10 million UK passengers disrupted during the winter

Over 10 million passengers across the UK faced air travel disruptions in the past few months, according to travel tech company AirHelp.

It crunched the numbers for 255,000 scheduled flights from November 2023 to February this year.

AirHelp’s data shows that approximately 26% of people travelling from the UK suffered from a disruption to their flight.

Whilst most of the passengers faced delays under three hours, so not eligible for financial compensation, nearly 1.2 million people did.

More than 1.9 million travellers had their trips cancelled altogether.

Looking at UK airport punctuality during the winter season, London Gatwick was in the bottom five, impacting over 1.7 million passengers (32%).

Manchester International Airport wasn’t much better with 29% of passengers suffering from flight disruptions between November and February.

The most punctual airport during this period was Newquay Cornwall Airport with only 16% of passengers disrupted.

London Heathrow to Sri Lanka was the most disrupted route with over 65% of passengers facing delays or cancellations.

This is closely followed by routes from Manchester to Abu Dhabi and London Heathrow to Nairobi in Kenya.

“The latest winter season has proven that the UK has significant room for improvement in terms of flight disruptions and cancellations,” said Tomasz Pawliszyn, CEO of AirHelp.
