Over a dozen dead in Phuket landslides
Thai emergency services say at least 13 people died after major landslides destroyed houses and luxury villas on the holiday island of Phuket.
The dead include a Russian couple.
More than a dozen people were injured and at least one person remains missing.
A landslide slammed into a residential area which includes villas owned or rented by foreigners.
It has affected about 200 homes, with up to 50 and some villas destroyed.
“Heavy rain began at 2am and caused a landslide that damaged homes. Those living in the area were caught off guard,” local police chief Khundech Na Nongkhai said.
Authorities declared the districts of Chalong, Karon and Rawai disaster zones, which are all popular with tourists.
