Over a third of UK flights delayed during ‘dreadful’ 2022

The ‘dreadful’ performance of airlines last year was slammed by Which? as it was revealed more than a third of UK flights were delayed.

Civil Aviation Authority data showed only 63% of flights were within 15 minutes of their scheduled time.

Over 220 million passengers were handled by UK airports last year.

About 2% of all flights were cancelled.

The average delay was 22 minutes, which is up 60% compared to pre-pandemic.

The industry’s recovery last year was heavily impacted by staff shortages after wide spread pandemic layoffs.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports were forced to limit departures during peak times.

The data is ‘unsurprising to anyone who endured the widespread chaos at UK airports,’ Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said.

It cited people being abandoned in airports and many still flighting to receive compensation months later.

“Airlines’ unacceptable treatment of passengers cannot be allowed to stand.”

“The government should also drop its proposals to drastically cut the compensation passengers are owed by airlines,” Concha added.
