Pay by the hour hotels in demand

Saturday, 15 Jun, 2011 0

A study of 1000 travellers commissioned by online hotel site cheaphotels.com.au reveals that more than two thirds (69%) of Australians would prefer to stay at a hotel that charges on a 24 hour basis.

More than 60% feel paying by the hour is a fairer way to pay for their hotel stay, over the traditional industry fee structure that charges guests the same price regardless of how long they actually stay in their room.

Almost 60% believe they should get a discounted rate when they check in late or check out early.

The study also shows Australians are spending less of their holiday time in their hotels, with 64% of respondents reporting that besides sleeping, they typically spend less than two hours a day at their hotel.

However, 74% of respondents said accommodation costs ate up more than half of their travel budget.

“The study indicates Australians aren’t always getting the most value out of their hotel stay and price-savvy travellers are interested in shifting more towards a ‘pay for what you use’ model,” says Braden Yuill, managing director of CheapHotels.com.au.

“Paying for a hotel by the hour used to conjure up images of sleazy rooms used for a romantic rendezvous.

“However, the trend is catching on around the world with a growing number of premium boutique hotels using a flexible pricing model as a point of difference and a way to build goodwill with travellers.

“Offering more flexible pricing options for guests who’ve arrived on a late flight or who only need a place to crash for a few hours could help develop a new income stream for the hotel industry here in Australia,” Yuill said.
