Ponant’s luxury icebreaker arrives in New Zealand
PONANT’s Le Commandant Charcot, on an Antarctic cruise, was welcomed into New Zealand waters.
It marked the first time the only luxury icebreaker has sailed the antipodes.
It was the halfway point of a round Antarctic journey from Argentina,
Following an overnight in Lyttelton on South Island, the polar exploration vessel sets off on the reverse itinerary.
The ship will retrace its path all the way to Ushuaia, taking travellers on a half-circumnavigation of Antarctica via the Ross Sea.
To commemorate the occasion, it hosted key Australia and New Zealand trade partners and media as well as PONANT’s most loyal guests.
Le Commandant Charcot has a hybrid electric Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) propulsion system.
The Polar Class ship was designed with respect for the environment.
It features the latest green technologies including waste recycling and sewage management.
Le Commandant Charcot has a capacity for 245 guests and launched in 2021.
