Princess Cruises skips Yorktown calls due to local opposition
Princess Cruises has now pulled its planned port calls at historic Yorktown, Virginia.
York County government officials say they were just informed by the cruise line that the planned stops in the town will be replaced by calls at Norfolk.
Two of its ships – the Island Princess and the Emerald Princess were scheduled to make three calls at Yorktown this summer.
There was strong opposition to this due to the perceived strain on the town’s services and overcrowding.
Yorktown has a population of just a few hundred while the Island Princess has a capacity for 2,200 guests.
Yorktown is a gateway to colonial Virginia history in the town itself and to Williamsburg and Jamestown.
Sister brand Holland America Line previously canceled Yorktown visits due to local opposition.
Yorktown welcomes river cruise vessels, dinner cruises and small sized tall sailing ships.
The prospect a mid-size cruise ship divided residents and business owners and led to several demonstrations.
“I don’t know how much money will be made, but we don’t feel like it’s worth the investment in infrastructure and the wear and tear on the roads and the community,” one said during a protest last year.
