PSA defends cruise industry's 'green' record

The Passenger Shipping Association has defended the cruise industry’s environmental record in a statement by director Bill Gibbons.

Responding to recent criticism, he said: “The travel industry as a whole is taking more action than ever before on environmental issues and the cruise industry is very much doing the same.

“However, like every part of our industry we are not complacent and we have a lot to do.

“But, let me stress that the cruise industry is proud of its efforts and is absolutely committed to understanding and improving its environmental impact and we look forward to working with our industry and tourism partners to build our work in this area in the future.”

He stressed that international regulations govern environmental standards for the cruising industry and individual cruise companies and associations are working to improving standards.

He said companies were investing in new technology on board such as grinders for food and product waste, crushers for glass, aluminium and cardboard materials, and sophisticated engine room equipment to reduce or eliminate liquid discharge.

“Newer ships, for example, boast the latest in wastewater management systems and are able to treat black and grey wastewater to a condition of drinkable water,” he said.
