Public vote on Sitka cruise ship limits denied

The Alaskan city of Sitka has rejected a proposal to put cruise overtourism to a public vote.

A local resident filed a petition asking for a public referendum on imposing cruise ship limits.

Resident Larry Edwards wanted a vote on limiting Alaska cruise passenger numbers to 240,000 a year.

The ordnance proposed would also place a daily and weekly limit on cruise passenger numbers.

The small port community welcomed over half a million Alaska cruise guests this summer, more than double the pre-pandemic number.

City officials knocked back the proposal as they said the proposed plan to enforce restrictions were ‘confusing, misleading, and incomplete.’

Edwards says the cruise industry has too much influence on local decision making.

“I feel that the cruise industry thinks it’s the planning director of the city. We need to take control back.”

Despite only having about 8,000 residents, Sitka is one of the top ports of call for Alaska cruises
