Puerto Vallarta cruise calls up 16 percent this year
The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board expects cruise ship calls to grow 16% this year.
Twenty more calls are expected during the June-September period followed by another 49 from October-December, in addition to the 62 cruises that have already made calls so far this year.
In all, about 317,210 passengers are predicted before the year-end, the tourism board said.
The cruise lines that visit most frequently are Norwegian, Princess, Carnival, and Holland America.
The numbers would have been slightly higher but for Royal Caribbean, Disney and Celebrity Cruises temporarily cancelling port calls in May following violence involving Mexican dugs gangs in Jalisco state.
However as tourism board director Agustin Alvarez pointed out, it did not impact Puerto Vallarta’s main tourism areas.
"No harm came to any residents or visitors to Puerto Vallarta and no disturbance, restriction or limits have affected tourists in Puerto Vallarta. All tourism infrastructure and services including the port, marina, airport, hotels and resorts remained fully operational," Alvarez said.
