Qantas targets net zero carbon emissions

Tuesday, 12 Nov, 2019 0

Qantas has set a target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 in a new push to become more sustainable.

Firstly, it intends to cap its net emissions at 2020 levels and will begin doubling the number of flights that are being offset.

It becomes only the second airline group to make a commitment to net zero emissions after British Airways owner IAG.

It covers Qantas, Jetstar, QantasLink and Qantas Freight.

Qantas group says it will invest $50m over the next decade in sustainable fuel supply.

It will work with government officials and private sector partners to support the development of sustainable aviation fuel.

It can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% but currently costs almost twice as much as traditional jet fuel, Qantas says.

"We recognise that airlines have a responsibility to cut emissions and combat climate change. We want to do more, and faster. We’re effectively doubling our carbon offsetting program from today and we’re capping our net emissions across Qantas and Jetstar from 2020," said Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce.

"Qantas offsets all of its own travel needs and so do many of our customers."

The company says customers offset 150,000 tonnes of carbon so far in 2019.
