Queenstown under state of emergency after floods
New Zealand’s top tourist town Queenstown is under a state of emergency after flooding and landslides.
There were evacuations while some people had to be rescued from their vehicles.
In addition, there is a boil water notice for all households after several were taken ill with parasitic infections.
There were confirmed cases of parasite cryptosporidium.
Health officials say it may have gotten into the public water supply and are asking everyone to boil water as a precaution.
Overall, about 100 people were evacuated due to floods.
Debris from forestry work was caught in the floods and has damaged some buildings.
“We have been working with emergency management to assess the full extent of the situation in the current conditions,” Mayor Glyn Lewers said.
Queenstown is New Zealand’s top winter sports and summer adventure tourism hotspot.
Queenstown Airport remains open although officials advised residents and tourists not to travel on roads unless necessary.
