A raft of geo domain names, which account for 150 million searches a year, are set to go on sale this Sunday.
The selling of domain names with geographical locations in them has become increasingly rare as most were bought years ago when the importance of the internet in travel was first realised.
Digital marketing agency BrogenMacyInternational.com bought up the .co.uk domain names with holiday destinations in the title years ago with the intention of setting up an online travel agency.
But now the company has decided to cash in on the names, given that in 2010 Google recorded 150 million searches for these domain names.
It is also selling domain names that are closely linked to travel.
The domains are:
TheCanaryIslands.co.uk;TheBahamas.co.uk; The-Caribbean.co.uk; StVincent.co.uk; StMartin.co.uk; StKitts.co.uk; South–Africa.co.uk; SanFrancisco.co.uk; Puertorico.co.uk; Philippines.co.uk; NYcity.co.uk; Martinique.co.uk; Luxury-Cruise-Direct.co.uk; LosAngeles.co.uk; Haiti.co.uk; Guadeloupe.co.uk; Grenadines.co.uk; Grenada.co.uk; FloridaKeys.co.uk; Eilat.co.uk; Curacao.co.uk; Cruise-uk.co.uk; Cruise-Holidays-Direct.co.uk; Carribean.co.uk; Brussels.co.uk; BritishVirginIslands.co.uk; Bonaire.co.uk; Benidorm.co.uk; Barbuda.co.uk; BalearicIslands.co.uk; Balearic.co.uk; Aruba.co.uk; Anguilla.co.uk; Alicante.co.uk; WestIndies.co.uk; VirginIslands.co.uk; USvirginislands.co.uk; TheVirginIslands.co.uk; TheRockies.co.uk; ThePhilippines.co.uk; TheMaldives.co.uk; TheGrenadines.co.uk; TheChannelslands.co.uk; YourTravel.co.uk; YourHoliday.co.uk; YourHolidays.co.uk; Yourflight.co.uk; YourFlights.co.uk; YourHotels.co.uk; yourUSA.co.uk; YourSpain.co.uk; YourSkiing.co.uk; YourScotland.co.uk; YourLakeDistrict.co.uk; YourIreland.co.uk; YourEurope.co.uk; YourAmsterdam.co.uk.
Company spokesman Joseph Smith said: “Consumers in general are spending more time online searching for destinations that they wish to go on holiday to, rather than searching for the name of a travel brand.
“In fact for the 45 geo domain names that we are selling, 2010 saw 150 million searches from Google.co.uk alone just for the destination addresses that we own.”
He added: “This is more keyword searches for the destinations than Thomson and Thomas Cook combined for the whole year.
“As the domain names are .co.uk, they are already ranked in Google.co.uk with very little content and receive what is known as type in traffic, where the consumer types in the location with .co.uk after it as they expect a site behind the URL/web address.
“By owning destinations such as Fiji.co.uk, Benidorm.co.uk, Losangeles.co.uk and many others, it is similar to owning a travel business in Oxford Street in London as footfall is the same as search engine traffic. People will naturally walk past your store so this represents a unique opportunity for travel industry entrepreneurs.
“If you own VirginIslands.co.uk then you have a unique opportunity to be one of the largest sellers of holidays to that destination. Destinations such as the Philippines with as many as 1.5 million searches monthly last year are hugely popular and if you were to own Philippines.co.uk you would be one of the biggest operators in that region."
The sale will be announced through the Sunday Times business opportunities section this Sunday.
