From cross-border train tickets to through sustainable supply chain management to innovative destination management – hundreds of readable case study opportunities

The latest Sustainable Tourism Report outlines many of the dramatic changes that are now taking place in global tourism.

Now, practically every single part of the industry is engaged in changing the way they work and in a few years time, we will be seeing an industry transformed.

To get ahead of the game, it is worthwhile to understand the opportunities that many others are successfully taking – and learn from them!

Opportunities like those that Capitaine Train, Loco2, and Silver rail are taking to deliver cross-border rail tickets: Opportunities like SNCF running a low cost, high speed train delivering 10 Euro fares from Paris to South East France: Opportunities like Thomas Cook are taking to deliver Local-Label local-benefit excursions, so far 40 of them: Opportunities like Rome2Rio, RouteRank and Neo are taking to deliver multi-modal door-to door travel solutions; Opportunities like Getaround, Cookening, Vayable and couchsurfing are taking to create cost-efficient peer-to-peer travel arrangements.

But, by far the most opportunities are being taken in destinations – in Frome, Falkirk and Cesena amongst others, they have focused on radically revitalizing their town centres. In Ireland and Ontario, Arran, Ludlow and Philadelphia (amongst many, many others – they’ve gone for FOOD in a big way to develop their local entrepreneurs and economies. Transportation, of course is critically important to a destination and low energy easy accessibility can be a game changer – so dozens of destinations such as, Trentino, Santa Barbara, Cumbria, and the Alpine Pearls group have gone in for low energy easily accessible transport. And in the face of climate change, destinations are getting the green message, picking up the gauntlet and joining the race to minimize emissions – and even try for the ultimate – carbon neutrality.

Reviewing airlines, train companies, cruises, tour operators and destinations – the 166 page Sustainable Tourism Report unearths 49 effective outbound marketing methods, 55 best practice studies from all over the industry, 100 effective destination marketing methods.

The report also lists 198 short studies of major players in sustainable tourism.
