Ryanair complies with ‘baseless’ ASA ruling

Ryanair has agreed to pull its controversial ‘Jab & Go’ ad campaign, after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received more than a thousand complaints.

The airline said the ASA’s claims were ‘baseless’ and meant that all advertising by airlines, tour operators and travel agents for travel or holidays this Easter and summer ‘should also be banned’.

Ryanair launched its ‘Jab & Go’ advertising campaign over Christmas with the first TV commercial airing on Boxing Day. The advert featured a small bottle labelled ‘vaccine’ and a syringe with the message: "Covid vaccines are coming so book your Eater and summer holidays today with Ryanair.

"One million seats on sale from £19.99 to sunshine destinations in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece and many more so you could jab and go."

A Ryanair spokesperson said: "The ASA’s ruling flies in the face of the UK’s successful vaccine rollout, however even though this ruling is baseless, Ryanair will comply with it and the Jab & Go adverts will not run again."

The ASA said consumer complained that it was misleading to suggest the vaccine would be rolled out by the spring and that travel restrictions would be over. Consumers also complained that the advert trivialised the pandemic’s impact on society.
