Scots tipped to spend most on holidays in 2013
The Scottish will be the biggest spenders in the UK this year, shelling out £242 per person more on holidays than those the national average, according to a new poll by discount travel website Hotwire.com
It found that 83% of Scots will spend the same or more in 2013 than last year on trips. Last year, the Scottish proved more frugal than those in the rest of the UK, so 30.5% plan to use money saved then to pay for this year’s holidays.
Hotwire’s survey, which quizzed 2008 adults in December, led it to the conclusion that nearly 1.5 million more Brits plan to take trips in 2013 versus last year and they will spend £1.6 billion more over the next 12 months.
The average spend on holidays will rise 2% to £1,944 per person, it said.
However, one in four Brits will only book a holiday if it is discounted, up from 14% last year, and half will proactively hunt down deals, according to Hotwire’s travel expert Fulvia Montresor.
"Brits are determined to travel in style this year, flying with traditional airlines and staying in 4 or 5-star hotels, however they will do so only if the price has been discounted," Montresor added.
"Only 8% said they would use discount airlines, choose hotels with a lower star-rating or stay further from the city centre. The vast majority of respondents were not willing to sacrifice on quality."
Hotwire is expecting an increase in the number of customers booking ‘secret’ hotels, whereby they choose the location and star-rating of a property but don’t find out the name of the hotel until the booking is confirmed.
‘Secret’ hotels offer customers discounts of up to 50% but last year only 7% of customers opted for these deals.
