Security review after guest takes gun on cruise ship

Port officials at Palm Beach have initiated a security review after a Margaritaville at Sea guest brought a loaded gun aboard undetected.

The Port of Palm Beach has put its security contractor on probation following the incident last month.

The unnamed female guest spent her four-day cruise with her firearm.

The security firm has been ordered to put in place an ‘extensive correction action security plan.’

It could have ‘resulted in a catastrophic life-altering event on the vessel or within the cruise terminal,’ Executive Director Michael Meekins said in a memo to Weiser Security Services.

The firearm was only detected on arrival back at the port by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The gun, loaded with eight bullets, was confiscated.

The port’s security firm will undergo a review through March 7, and security officers have since undergone firearm detection audits.

Transportation Security officers do not man screening points at cruise ports – this is left to individual ports to employ security contractors.
