Security stepped up in Majorca

Monday, 11 Aug, 2009 0

Increased security measures in Majorca will be stepped up further, according to the Government of the Balearic Islands.

It has “strongly condemned” Sunday’s terrorist attacks in the island’s capital of Palma, but assured holidaymakers that they should keep on coming.

“Both the airport and the rest of the infrastructure for tourists will continue to run normally, so tourists and visitors can continue without changes to their holiday plans,” said a statement.

The Spanish Government Delegation on the Balearic Islands reported that “due to the low power of the devices we can deduce that the terrorists’ objective was not to cause direct damage to people through their actions”.

Security forces continue to work to find those responsible for the attacks in Majorca, reported to be the Basque separatist movement ETA.

A tourist information toll-free hotline has been set up in English, Spanish and German.

The telephone number for those already in Majorca or in Spain is 900 900 365 and is also available abroad with regular rates to Spain dialing the international code of Spain (+34).

The service is available from Mondays to Saturdays between 10.00 to 18.00.

A toll-free number has also been made availabe for calls from Germany, on 0800 180 66 80.

The government described the bombs as being “low level explosive devices” placed in the restrooms of two restaurants in Es Portitxol in Palma.

A third was placed in the underground area of the Plaza Mayor (the main square) in Palma.

No casualties have been reported in any of the three cases and the structural damage has been either nonexistent or minimal.

The Foreign Office has not changed its advice for Majorca, but warned: "There is a high threat from terrorism in Spain. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers."
